NetAISys and EnvSys Workshops are merging for ACM MobiSys 2023 on June 18, creating a comprehensive one-day event.
Both workshops revolve around the pivotal roles of artificial intelligence, focusing on different but complementary aspects. NetAISys explores the integration of AI with networking systems, investigating the challenges and opportunities it brings. EnvSys, on the other hand, emphasizes the application of these technologies to environmental sensing, tackling crucial environmental issues using tech solutions.
We believe that this merge will serve as a platform for fruitful discussions and exchange of ideas, giving you exposure to a broader spectrum of research at the intersection of networking technologies, AI and environmental sensing. This will also provide an enriched setting where the EnvSys cases can potentially act as real-world use-cases for Networked AI Systems.

"Free-space gesture interaction through communication and sensing conversion":Recent advances in RF-sensing have demonstrated that communication systems (e.g. WiFi, cellular, LoRa, Blue-tooth, etc.) may not only provide connectivity, but also sensing and environmental perception capabilities. Therefore, RF convergence - realizing sensing capabilities utilizing resources originally reserved for communication - has gained attention as a potential solution to better utilize the available spectrum. The proposed designs target architectures where sensing and communication are co-designed at physical and Medium Access Control (MAC) layer.
Supported by edge intelligence, this enables new possibilities for free-space (gesture) interaction, activity recognition or localization and tracking in IoT-augmented smart computing environments. The talk will summarize recent developments in RF-sensing and highlight challenges and opportunities for interaction in the context of HCI.
Stephan Sigg is an Associate Professor at Aalto University in the Department of Information and Communications Engineering. He heads the Ambient Intelligence research group. Prior to Aalto University, he has worked in Germany and in Japan. Professor Sigg’s research is focused on the design, analysis and optimisation of (randomized) algorithms in Mobile and Pervasive Computing domains, in particular focusing on (wireless) networking and security. In recent years has worked on problems related to usable security, device-free human sensing, pro-active context computing, distributed adaptive beamforming, communication and Sensing convergence, and physical layer function computation.
"Advancements in Mobile Computer Vision: Supersight Application and Its Real-World Use Cases": The Supersight mobile application presents a revolutionary approach to the utilization of computer vision technology. It offers a streamlined method to collect and analyze people flow data, traditionally an expensive and complex undertaking. This talk will delve into how we've simplified the process with an easy-to-use mobile application and immediate deployment model, making it accessible for varied projects and requirements. We will explore different real-world applications where Supersight has shown significant impact. This includes analytics for business premises, event management, cargo container inspections, and real-time aircraft maintenance analytics. The objective is to demonstrate how innovations in computer vision can have direct and practical implications for industries and how these advancements can be harnessed for further research and applications.
Kimmo Pentikäinen is a seasoned executive at Elisa Corporation, spearheading new business development and technology transformations. His current focus lies in the establishment of 5G business, with a diverse range of services such as 12K video, telepathology, and robotics. Kimmo has extensive experience in leveraging AI for internal processes, including mobile network operations and customer interactions. His previous leadership role in research saw him build a global network of over 1400 scientists.
Duration:Each presentation will be allotted 15 minutes - 12 minutes for the presentation itself and 3 minutes for Q&A.

The 1st International Workshop on Networked AI Systems (NetAISys), colocated with MobiSys 2023, aims to bring together leading experts in the field to explore the latest advancements and challenges in the integration of AI and networking technologies. Such integration is driving the development of intelligent and autonomous systems that are capable of making decisions and performing tasks in real-time. The workshop will provide a platform for the presentation and discussion of cutting-edge research, the demonstration of innovative networked AI systems and applications, and the exchange of ideas, experiences, and case studies. The significance of this workshop to the ACM MobiSys community lies in the growing reliance on AI systems that are connected to and operate within wireless networks. With AI/ML migrating to the network edge, there is an increasing demand for efficient and effective AI systems that play a crucial role in powering various intelligent and autonomous systems in dynamic network environments with varying network conditions. By bringing together researchers, practitioners, and industry professionals, we hope to create a collaborative environment and a one-of-kind and valuable opportunity to delve into the challenges and latest advancements presented by networked AI systems and applications. We look forward to sharing our experience and insights with the ACM MobiSys community.
The integration of AI and networking technologies is driving the development of intelligent and autonomous systems that are capable of making decisions and performing tasks in real-time. These systems are critical for a wide range of applications, including 5G networks, IoT, and edge computing. However, designing, implementing, and deploying AI systems in networked environments presents a number of unique challenges. One of the main challenges is ensuring that AI systems can operate effectively in dynamic network environments with varying network conditions. Another requirement is balancing the trade-offs between the computational and communication requirements of AI systems in networked environments. Additionally, there is a need to develop new algorithms and protocols that can effectively utilize the resources of the network while ensuring robustness and security. Finally, networked AI systems will deal with the high-dimensionality and heterogeneity of the data generated by AI systems in networked environments, which requires novel data management and analytics techniques.
The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners working on the design, implementation, and deployment of AI systems in networked environments. The workshop aims to provide a forum for discussing the latest research and development in this field, as well as for sharing practical experiences and case studies.
By bringing together experts from academia and industry, the workshop aims to foster collaboration and to promote the development of new ideas and research directions in this field. The workshop is co-located with ACM MobiSys 2023 and will be held as an in-person event in Helsinki (Finland). We invite submissions of original research papers, as well as papers describing practical experiences, case studies, and tutorials.

The 1st International Workshop on Networked AI Systems will solicit of two different types of submissions:
Full paper submission. Solicited submissions include both full technical workshop papers and white position papers. Maximum length of such submissions is 6 pages (including references), and if accepted they will be published by ACM and appear in the ACM Digital Library.
Work-in-progress and demo submissions. Abstracts describing work-in-progress and demonstrations are also welcome and warmly encouraged. Submissions are limited to 2 pages (excluding references), and if accepted included in the program as a short oral presentation – but will only be published on the workshop website (not the ACM Digital Library). Deadlines for this informal track remain open even past the early registration deadline of MobiSys 2023; author notifications will be rolling (i.e. max of 4 days after submission) to enable early authors to take advantage of available discounts.
NetAISys follows a single-blind review process, but all submissions must be original work not under review at any other workshop, conference, or journal. Submissions must be submitted as a PDF in the double-column MobiSys format. Submissions can use this LaTex template that is known to comply with the formatting requirements. Authors remain responsible for checking that their resulting PDF meets our formatting and anonymity specifications.
[IMPORTANT!] A selection of workshop best papers will be invited to submit extended versions for tentative publication in a special issue of Elsevier Computer Networks.
